Hula hooping.
Years ago, I was a devout student of hula hooping.
[Note: we actually didn’t use “hula”, it was just referred to as “hooping.”]
My obsession with hooping changed my life.
It tricked me into exercising.
As I became obsessed with a form of exercise that didn't feel like exercise, I got strong and fit AF… A true awakening!
My friend Nicole was the ringleader of our band of ‘hoopers’ and she taught classes inspired by the chakra system. In one of her lessons, she shared a concept that I’ve never forgotten:
Liberation through limitation.
This phrase is pure genius, because it’s applicable to so many facets of being human.
Because we freak out when we feel “limited”.
Whether that’s getting engaged, committing to a creative project, or planning a year in advance.
We fear that by placing boundaries on ourselves, we will become stifled, bogged down, caged in.
But here’s the incredible epiphany behind “liberation through limitation”...
It is precisely because of those boundaries we place on ourselves that we’re able to expand exponentially.
Let’s go back to our examples:
💍Getting engaged: true, it limits you to potentially spending the rest of your life with one person. And, that is also the path to deeper trust and a greater capacity for intimacy, vulnerability and collaborative growth through divine partnership.
💡Committing to a creative project: true, it limits you in how much you can be spontaneous with accepting new projects or allowing the winds of inspiration to toss you around. And yet, it is only when we fully commit, with a wholehearted fuck yes, that we actually finish the damn thing! By going all in, we actually come into our mastery.
📆Planning our year in advance: true, it limits you to the commitments you’ve already made to this project or that trip, and takes some of the spontaneity out of the equation. And yet, all too often when we insist on being spontaneous, we neglect our needs in lieu of responding (or rather, reacting) to the most pressing needs of the moment. In other words, our most important tasks, visions and projects take the back burner for all the “urgent” things that arise.
Can you see a throughline, Britta?
In all 3 of these examples, we’re afraid of losing our spontaneity. And yet…
When we neglect to take a stand for our needs and what matters most to us, that space will inevitably get filled with other people’s needs, and what matters most to them.
Planning is all about creating and then executing healthy boundaries.
It’s the willingness to plant your feet in the soil and say “My needs matter. My goals matter. My vision matters.”
I see you, and I want to support you in taking that stand. Because everything we truly want to create depends on your ability to show up courageously for what matters most.
If this resonates, join me for my re-imagined 2025 planning challenge, Spirit-Led Life Design.
I’ll show you how to set limitations and healthy boundaries, so you can expand beyond what you thought was possible.
The Live Challenge begins December 12th—nice and early this year, so you can start the new year with your plan already crystalized and ready to roll out!
Let’s do this.
OXO,
PS.
Like all challenges, this one is done most effectively—and is the most fun—with friends! 🤓🤓🤓
Forward this email or send this link to someone you’d LOVE to buddy up with through this process.
Best part? The two of you (heck, make it a group!) can check in monthly or seasonally to help each other stay accountable to your annual plan and most heartfelt intention you’re holding for yourself.
Because teamwork makes the dream work.
