Onward!

Indecision is a huge energy leak.

Indecision will take your fragrant vitality and slowly leach it from you, leaving you dazed, confused and half-dead at your desk.

‘What We Do in the Shadows’ provided Ben and me with a lot of laughter several winters back.

Entrepreneurs, parents, creatives and leaders are making decisions constantly.

When you’re clear, well rested, and aligned with your intuition, making decisions can be  painless and elegant.

But if you’re unclear, exhausted or uninspired, the pressure of a decision can send us hiding in the pantry, drowning out our discomfort with the loud crunch of Siete tortilla chips.

Or is that just me?

The root of “decision” literally means to cut or to slice—when we decide, we use the sacred sword of discernment and slice away the no so we are left with the yes.

Autumn is the ideal time of year to take things off your plate, simplify, trim the fat and let the old debris fall away so you can send all your vital energy to the thing that matters most.

Here’s 5 common snafus that keep us stuck in decision fatigue, overwhelm, and paralysis—and pep talks to coax powerful decisions:

Snafu #1: You’re afraid to make the wrong decision.

Pep Talk:
There are no mistakes, only learnings. What if there is no such a thing as a wrong decision? Abraham Hicks said “you can’t get it wrong, and you’ll never get it done.” At first this quote freaked me out… but in time, it brought deep relief. Stop fearing you’ll make a mistake, and lean in. Can you TRUST that every decision you make will be the next necessary stepping stone on your path?

Snafu #2: You take yourself, your work and your life WAY too seriously.

Pep Talk:
We all do this. It is a rare awakened human who doesn’t get lost in the deep furrows of their own forehead. And why not? The news is enough to make us cry, let alone our own challenges with work, relationships, and the creative process. On the flipside, we can choose delight! Do you know how lucky you are? How small the chances are that out of all the cosmic waves, particles and energy forms existing in the universe at this very moment, your soul chose to incarnate as a human being in this lifetime at this very moment on Planet Earth?!? Let’s not waste it by being tense and stressed out. Are you courageous enough to risk joy, in spite of it all?

Snafu #3: We’re trying to do too much at once

Pep Talk:
“The one who tries to chase two rabbits catches neither” — Confucius
When we’re overwhelmed, we can’t see the big picture. Overwhelm is an indicator that you’re avoiding—making a choice, looking at the details, paying attention to what matters. The fastest balm to overwhelm is paying attention. Overwhelmed with finances? Spend 30 minutes looking at your accounts and taking small actions. Overwhelmed with your to-do list? Do a brain purge and get everything out on paper or a word doc. When you can see it, overwhelm dissipates. From there, you can prioritize.

Extra Credit:
Google the Eisenhower Grid and categorize everything on your plate today. Watch with amusement as you realize you’re spending all your time on the least important things.

Snafu #4: We’re not listening to real-time universal feedback

Pep Talk:
We humans love control. Our need to control our lives (and other people’s lives) causes needless suffering. If we could be attentive and observant to what’s happening in the now, perhaps decisions wouldn't be such a struggle. For today, assume the omens are there, and watch for them. Marianne Williamson says miracles are occurring constantly, but we miss them because they don’t come packaged the way we expect. When we pay attention to which doors life opens or closes for us, the next step is pretty damn obvious. When we ignore the signs and insist on "figuring it out” ourselves, things get hard.

Snafu #5: We try to be “good” and override our intuition

Pep Talk:
We’re great at making decisions with our brain instead of our gut. I recently had to pull out of several commitments; when I traced back to the moment of those choice points, I realized I had made decisions based on “should” rather than my own inner guidance. I wanted it to be the right time rather than it actually feeling like the ideal time… and it came back to bite me in the ass. What would you do if you gave yourself permission to be bad? A bad parent, a bad teacher, a bad artist, a bad leader? Unpack those assumptions—maybe that’s your next homework assignment.
