The real reason.

Yesterday I led a prayer-bead making workshop for my Rose & Sword cohort.

I began with the following disclaimer:

Let's embrace the fact many of us will create this strand of beads, it will break, and we will need to make it again. This may happen multiple times. If you choose to knot between each bead, decide now to embrace this tedious task as the mindfulness practice it is, rather than simply an end result. Crafting the strand is as valuable as working with it once it's finished.

As I shared these disclaimers, I referenced my 10-day songwriting challenge, which similarly is more about obliterating perfectionism than actually writing songs.

Today, I realized that the two most recent podcast episodes I've published were both corrupted incomplete files, which I didn't realize until after I published them. I could blame the full solar eclipse last week... but c'mon. Problem-solving needed in the tech department.

What do all three of these micro-stories have in common?

The obvious outcome is not the true deliverable.

The REAL REASON I string prayer beads, write 10 songs in 10 days and publish podcast episodes is the sacred act of discovery.

"It's not the destination, it's the journey" is the overly-quoted concept credited to Ralph Waldo Emerson.

And you know... he was right.

But damn, we do tend to forget.

We focus on the destination. We delude ourselves that when we reach the mountaintop, we will be happy!

Stop what you're doing.

Can you appreciate the process of your actions just as much as the product?

It's easy to give this idea lip service. Harder to actually implement.

Try it out today. Right now.

Start small.

This moment.

What's the obvious outcome?

And what's the real reason behind it?

Ps. This is the kind of thing I love supporting my clients with.
