I've enjoyed a variety of birthday rituals over the years.
Earlier this spring, I had a client come to my home on the Salish Sea for a 3-day in person private immersion retreat with me. She was about to celebrate her birthday, and as it turns out, there was a lot to unpack around that.
While preparing for her arrival, I got a strong intuitive nudge to circle back to a tarot numerology framework I had learned several years earlier. In this system, you use your birth date to calculate your Lifetime Personality/Spiritual Symbol, as well as an Annual Growth Symbol, represented by one of the 22 cards from the major arcana.
My client's birthday reading was SO ON POINT.
And I thought, 'huh, that went really well, I should go back and refresh my own cards...'
What I found was astoundingly validating.
According to Angeles Arrien, author of The Tarot Handbook and The Four Fold Way:
You find your Lifetime Personality + Spiritual Symbol by adding the day and month of your birthday to the year. Then you add the 4-digits together to get a smaller number. If it's over 22 (as there are 22 cards in the major arcana), you add those numbers together. For example:
8/6/1982
8 + 6 = 14
14 + 1982 = 1996
1 + 9 + 9 + 6 = 25
2 + 5 = 7
Therefore, my Lifetime Personality + Spiritual Symbol is 7, The Chariot.
This archetypal symbol will never change for you, and is said to hold codes that reveal your most central themes of transformation in this lifetime.
When I read The Chariot again, I lost my sh*t because it was so affirming.
The Chariot is the principle of balancing activity with stillness, motion and rest, and has everything to do with change. In essence, this card as my lifetime symbol lets me know that my multifaceted, multipassionate nature is not, in fact, shiny object syndrome! Rather, I simply need variety. Therefore, my work will always be to dance in the space between doing and being, yang and yin.
You find your Annual Growth Symbol by adding the day and month of your birthday to the year of your current birthday. This symbol does not change with the calendar year, but from birthday to birthday. For example:
8 + 6 = 14
14 + 2024 = 2038
2 + 0 + 3 + 8 = 13
So my card last year was #13, Death/Rebirth.
No wonder it was such a doozy! I hung out in the liminal space all year long, and in the discomfort of not knowing where I was going next, I got to continously relax into the mystery. My mantra from last year? You can't force clarity.
As of today:
8 + 6 = 14
14 + 2025 = 2039
2 + 0 + 3 + 9 = 14
So my card this year is #14, Temperance.
I can't tell you how delighted I am to greet Temperance! This archeype brings integration, synthesis, and a unification of opposites. It speaks to me about feeling divided in myself—between all those things I love to do simultaneously... Chariot vibes—and finding a way to harmonize those seemingly opposing energies. According to Arrien, a 14 year is one where things begin to "fall into place" and "come together." With the recent emergence of my Rose & Sword curriculum (strong Chariot medicine, btw!) I feel this renewal and rebirth completely.
My mantra for this year?
Still forming. Stay tuned.
I can say with certainty that I feel resurrected, alive in a whole new way, and excited for the path ahead.
